The company typically completes work throughout central and western United States but is open to working in any geographical location.

Awards and Recognition

National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) Top Job Project Award Nomination – Horizontal Boring & Tunneling Co. was honored to be a finalist in the Top Job Trenchless Technology category for work completed for the City of Thornton on the Thornton, Colorado Water Project. The company performed multiple trenchless crossings beneath active roadways, demonstrating technical expertise, precision, and a strong commitment to safety and quality.

The Project: The Thornton Water Project is a long-term infrastructure initiative designed to secure a reliable, high-quality water supply for the City of Thornton and its growing population. The project includes a 70-mile underground pipeline and is one of the largest water infrastructure projects currently underway in Colorado, with completion anticipated by 2028.

Our Trenchless Work: Horizontal Boring & Tunneling Co. completed trenchless tunnel crossings totaling 1,664 linear feet, including the project’s longest and most complex crossing—an 837’ tunnel beneath the E-470 toll road and its on- and off-ramps. The project involved deep shafts exceeding 40 feet in depth and challenging mixed-face ground conditions, requiring specialized Tunnel Boring Machine selection, custom shaft construction, and mechanical-joint steel casing to maintain productivity and schedule. These crossings built upon the company’s prior work in Johnstown and Windsor, Colorado, bringing the company’s total contribution to 3,073 linear feet of tunnels on the Thornton Water Project.
